Open-source licences

OwnWeb is built with open-source software. These are the main components and the licences they are used under.

1Browser engine

  • Electron: MIT licence. Copyright Electron contributors and GitHub Inc.
  • Chromium: BSD-style licence, with components under their own licences. Copyright The Chromium Authors.
  • Node.js: MIT licence. Copyright Node.js contributors.
  • AndroidX WebKit (Android app): Apache License 2.0. Copyright The Android Open Source Project.

The full licence texts for the engine and its components are included with each copy of the browser.

2Browser features

  • Ad and tracker blocking: @ghostery/adblocker, Mozilla Public License 2.0, used unmodified. Source: github.com/ghostery/adblocker.
  • Filter lists: EasyList and EasyPrivacy (easylist.to), dual-licensed under GPLv3 and CC BY-SA 3.0, and Ghostery’s own lists. They are downloaded when blocking is on and are not shipped with the browser.
  • Cookie pop-up handling: @duckduckgo/autoconsent, Mozilla Public License 2.0, used unmodified. Copyright DuckDuckGo, Inc. and contributors.
  • Reading view: @mozilla/readability, Apache License 2.0. Copyright Arc90 Inc and Mozilla.
  • PDF viewer: PDF.js, Apache License 2.0. Copyright Mozilla Foundation.
  • HTML sanitising: DOMPurify, used under the Apache License 2.0. Copyright Cure53 and other contributors.
  • Domain handling: tldts, MIT licence. Public Suffix List data, Mozilla Public License 2.0, copyright Mozilla Foundation.
  • Location on Linux: dbus-native, MIT licence.

3Fonts

Bricolage Grotesque, Geist and Geist Mono, under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. They are used in the browser and on this website.

4This website

  • React and React Router: MIT licence.
  • Tailwind CSS: MIT licence.
  • Radix UI and Lucide icons: MIT and ISC licences.

5Apps

Each app carries its own list of the open-source components it uses, shown with the app. Tools an app installs, such as FFmpeg, are distributed under their own licences.

6Source code for copyleft components

Components under the Mozilla Public License are used unmodified, and their source is available from the projects named above. If you need the source of a component as its licence entitles you, contact us.
